Annexation of Hawaii #2

The issue of this cartoon is also the Annexation of Hawaii.  The whole reason we had settled down in Hawaii besides the sugar was because we were spreading Christianity. The cartoonist’s message of this cartoon is that Uncle Sam had claimed Hawaii. Other countries that were expanding their territories could not get it because it was OUR land. Other people might say that the U.S did not have the right to just go over to Hawaii and just defeat their queen and take over the land. Hawaii was a pretty happy country and’ then we just swooped down and got it. One technique of the cartoon is symbolism. Uncle Sam is there with Hawaii and her is wearing a jacket that looks like the American Flag. There is a little exaggeration because, Uncle Sam’s fork is HUGE! The form is symbolizing the power of the U.S. Also Hawaii is very small compared to Uncle Sam and the other rulers of other countries. Last but not least there is labeling. At the bottom of the cartoon it says; “you fellows will please stand back while I try these oyster sandwiches myself”. This means that Hawaii is ours and no one else can have it. This does not support my stance on imperialism because I do not think we should have got Hawaii.
