The issue of this cartoon is
the Purchase of Alaska. At the beginning Alaska was not a very favored thing
because it was just a big block of ice. But they soon found out that it had
tons of natural resources. This cartoonist also does not like the purchase. He
says that all Alaska is, is a land of polar bears, seals, and icebergs. Also
that Russia just gave it to us because they did not want it any more. Other
people might argue that we did not buy Alaska with just two toy boats. We had
paid a lot of money for the land. Another thing people might argue for is that
Russia was only selling the land because they did not want Great Britain to get
it. This cartoonist had some techniques. One of them is the labeling at the
bottom of the cartoon. The labeling is a Russian man saying that we have this
big wasted place, do you want it? To a “little boy”. There is also exaggeration
in the cartoon also. The Russian man is as tall as the iceberg in the
background; symbolizing the power. There is a little symbolizing but not much.
There is some kind of bird on top of the Russian man’s hat. That symbol
probably symbolizes Russia. This does support my opinion with imperialism
because it has a negative effect on it. Alaska turned out very important to
America.
