The issue of this cartoon is
the Annexation of Hawaii. The Annexation of Hawaii was when we took over Hawaii
because we were settling there and there were good natural resources. The
cartoonist’s message is that the queen of Hawaii and Roosevelt. Both sides are
fighting (or weighing in this case) who has the control over the sugar cane
farms. But the American man weighs more than the queen so we have more control.
Other people might say that the queen should have the most control because it
was her land but, because of imperialism, that did not happen. One technique is
symbolism. One piece of symbolism is Uncle Sam in the background. Uncle Sam is
smiling because we had won the sugar because we had more power (or weighed
more) than the queen and, we had again expanded our territory. Second in major
exaggeration. The queen of Hawaii is really fat and has a very ugly and mean
face. Probably because she is angry about losing her land and the sugar cane. A
third one is labeling. The author labeled that Uncle Sam is in Hawaii and had
won the sugar. Hawaii still makes excellent sugar.
