Purchase of Alaska

The issue of this cartoon is the Purchase of Alaska. The purchase of Alaska was when we bought a “Iceland” from Russia because of our belief in imperialism. The cartoonist does not think the purchase was a great thing to do. This is because it says on the poster “map of the Russian fairy land. Only $7,000.00 in gold. The cartoonist would not say that if he was supporting the Purchase of Alaska. Other opinions of the Purchase of Alaska could be that it has many resources. For example, Alaska had timber, gold, oil and much more natural resources. Also Alaska could have new animal meat like, caribou and polar bear. So there could be more to eat. This cartoon has much techniques. One of them being, symbolism. On the poster of Alaska there are American flags on each of the mountains; symbolizing that Alaska was our land. There is also exaggeration. The man smoothing the head of the man in the chair, is much taller than the man in the chair. Labeling was also in the cartoon. The labeling is describing what is going on in the cartoon. This cartoon does support my position on imperialism. This is because I do not think that we should have bought Alaska and the cartoonist of this cartoon agrees. The next cartoon is also an example of the Purchase of Alaska.
