Spanish American War

This cartoon is about the Spanish American War. The Spanish American war was when Cuba wanted freedom against Spain; we helped them and defeated them.  The cartoonist’s message of this cartoon is that when countries like Cuba and Puerto Rico wanted help to get out of the Spanish rule; they “knocked” on our door to help them. The cartoonist made us open our doors to help them. Other people might say that they did not really look at us for help; that the U.S was only helping so they could get more land for their country. The main technique the author used was symbolism. Uncle Sam is opening the door to the U.S and there is a bald eagle that looks like an American Flag. There is a little exaggeration, Uncle Sam is a lot taller than the kids from Puerto Rico and Cuba. This means that we had much more power than the countries had. There is a little labeling. If you look closely, on the children’s shirts say what countries they are from. Like one kid is from Cuba. This cartoon kind of supports my position, kind of not. I agree that we should have helped the other countries but we should have not gained them. Cuba was fighting for their independence and they never got to be an independent country!
